Genesis 13:8 And Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren.
Genesis 13:9 Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left.
Genesis 13:10 And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar.
Genesis 13:11 Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other.
Genesis 13:12 Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom.
Genesis 13:13 But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.
..If you flirt with the world it’s going to draw you into its corruption. You see as I’ve said he was not longer outside the city but was sitting in the gateway of the city. This was no small thing for him, it was an indication that he was a leader in the city – so he had recognition. They referred to him as a judge. So Lot went from being an outsider to a leader in a city where the people sin greatly against God. Clearly he has disregarded or participated in the depravity of this city. The influence of sin has either seared his conscience so he no longer saw sin the same way or it allowed him possibly to be a participant. We get a good indication now of Abraham’s burden to intercede for him. ‘ How The World Must Be Removed From Our Hearts. ‘
Delivered From The World
There’s a lesson here isn’t there? If you hang around sin long enough it can become normalised in our life and this is the problem. And when this happens what should be appalling and repulsive reaches the point of being acceptable. In many ways we’re all a product of this life we live in and what sin has done. This is why God is delivering us. This is why we preach the Deeper Life and as I’ve always said – the nature of it is deliverance. For we’ve all in many ways compromised with the depravity of this world. Jesus said that in the last days it would be like Sodom and Gomorrah – like the times of Noah. It’s around us – the whole depravity.
Don’t Flirt With The World
What’s fascinating about Lot’s story is that he had the opportunity to choose where he wanted to go – but he chose to live near the people of Sodom. How could he think that the influence of the city would not come near and impact him? It’s probably common sense – if you flirt with the world or try to get too near it it’s going to influence you. That is the very thing that God is working out of our life – our heart and circumstances – the love of this world, the dependence on this world and what it has to offer and so on.. ..
